TMS Therapy for Adolescent Depression in Scottsdale:

In this FOX 10 Health Watch segment, American TMS Clinics explains how transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. The report also explores an FDA-cleared TMS treatment option for adolescents with depression, providing another noninvasive option when medication and other conventional treatments have not provided enough relief.

What Is TMS Therapy and How Does It Work?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, is a noninvasive treatment that uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood, emotional regulation and other neurological functions. Unlike medication, TMS works directly on targeted brain networks without circulating throughout the body. Treatment is performed in our Scottsdale clinic while the patient remains awake and comfortably seated. It requires no surgery, anesthesia or recovery time, and patients can resume normal activities immediately after each session.

During treatment, a specialized magnetic coil is positioned against the scalp and delivers repeated magnetic pulses to carefully selected areas of the brain. These pulses are intended to activate and strengthen neural pathways that may not be functioning normally. Sessions generally last approximately 15–30 minutes, although the length, frequency and total number of treatments vary based on the condition being treated, the protocol used and the patient’s individual needs.

TMS has established clinical uses for conditions such as major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Following a clinical evaluation and informed discussion, TMS may also be considered for additional mental health and neurological conditions. American TMS Clinics further personalizes treatment by using advanced qEEG brain mapping to evaluate patterns of brain activity and help guide each patient’s treatment plan. Our goal is not to provide the same protocol to every patient, but to develop an approach based on the individual’s symptoms, brain activity, treatment history and clinical needs.
